CHAPTER EIGHT

“Any luck with the presentation so far?” Jessi asked as they worked behind the building, letting the shelter dogs get out into the large playpens for some exercise. “Or maybe I should be asking if there’s anything I can do.”

Courtney shrugged as she watched a white lab mix named Clove streak toward one side of the fenced-in yard, put the brakes on just in time to miss the chain link, and then turn around and race off in the other direction. “I’m not sure there’s much I can do.”

“You always say that,” Jessi pointed out. “When you’ve got something troubling you–whether it’s something with the shelter, your personal life, or some wild mystery you’ve managed to get yourself embroiled in–you always think you won’t be able to handle it. But you do. Every time. And you know we’re always here to help.”

“I know.” Courtney smiled warmly at her coworker. She’d worked alongside people at Miller and Martinez Marketing who were perfectly nice when they spoke to you but who would easily stab you in the back just to get your desk when you weren’t looking. Fortunately, her luck had been far better here. “When it comes to the contest, I’m just frustrated that I’m limited on time. I think we could make this a really great presentation if we just had an extra week or two.”

“And the other stuff?” Jessi asked. She picked up a tennis ball and threw it for Billie, a border collie mix who was all about playing fetch.

“Mom and Dad have a few houses they liked, so they have some options to consider. I haven’t heard much of anything from Detective Fletcher about the case, and I can’t say that I have a lot of great leads myself. It’s driving me crazy, but in the meantime, I’m trying to focus on what I can.”

Jessi looked over her shoulder as a van pulled into the parking lot and stopped at the edge of the building where it wouldn’t be in the way of any customers. She read the big sign on the side that said, “Cooper’s Construction” and turned back to Courtney. “Does that involve having some repairs done? Because I have a whole list of things for you, boss.”

Courtney managed a laugh as she called Clove over and clipped a leash onto her collar. The building constantly needed repairs, which really wasn’t funny at all, but she’d been dealing with it long enough that it was more like a running joke than anything else. “Hopefully, we’ll get around to them. Actually, I wanted Mark to give me a bid on adding a new wing.”

“Wow, you really are serious about winning this money, aren’t you?” Jessi gaped at her for a moment before she convinced Billie it was time to go inside. “That’s big stuff!”

“Yes, but it’s what this place has needed ever since I first started here. Getting this bid is actually part of my strategy. Can you put Clove up for me so I can go talk to him?”

“Sure thing!” Jessi grabbed Clove’s lead in her free hand.
